The designers of new airport facilities face a series of fresh challenges in order to achieve the delicate balance between long term economic and environmentally sustainable developments. These challenges include the need to cater for ever increasing volumes of passenger and cargo traffic; balancing the requirements of traditional airline versus low cost airline clients; generating increasing revenues from non-aeronautical operations, including the development of real-estate close to the airport, in a way that results in an environmentally sustainable airport facility.

Panel Session Three: The future of Passenger Terminal Retailing

Creating commercial space – the SkyWorld in the Hamburg Airport Plaza
By the end of 2008, Hamburg Airport will open a third terminal building located between two existing passenger terminals, which will be specifically dedicated to retailing and F&B uses and almost triple the existing commercial space. The presentation will refer to the parameters the planning process, including market research, location branding and space allocation issues, and explain why the Shopping Plaza may well serve as a business case for “retail driven terminals” in Europe.
Thomas Immelmann, Director Commercial,
Hamburg International Airport

The emerging waves of airport retail
In retailing, the only thing constant is change. Airport retail is sensitive to global security issues, foreign tax policies, passenger flows and the diverse demographics of its customers. Waves of airport retail development now extend beyond airport terminals to engage adjacent communities. This session will explore how these shifts are affecting gateway airports and emerging second tier airports.
Chris LeTourneur, President & CEO,
MXD Development Strategists

Panel Session Four: Planning for the Airport City

Re-defining the airport city and the aerotropolis phenomenon
Inderjit Singh, Senior Vice President, DAE Airports –

Terminal masterplan 2020 for Frankfurt Airport
Frankfurt Airport’s infrastructure is currently undergoing huge redevelopment. Affected by the need for more capacity, lean and cost-efficient processes, facilities for widebody aircraft operations, space to expand and optimise retail areas and new security regulations, Frankfurt Airport developed a Terminal Masterplan up to the year 2020. It aims at optimising and and refurbishing existing Terminals 1 and 2 by 2012. Moreover, a modular passenger terminal with a capacity for 25 million is planned to open in different phases between 2013 and 2020. Fullfilling all customer needs in budget and with time efficiency are the main factors influencing all projects. From this background, the presentation will give a complete picture of the status of different plans and projects currently underway.
Michael Schwarz, Senior Executive Manager Terminal Development & Deputy Vice President Infrastructure, Fraport

Domodedovo Aerotropolis and Airport City projects
Investors and operators are planning the next stage of Domodedovo's Airport City project, which includes logistic parks, office centres, recreation areas and a large retail and entertainment complex. In addittion to passenger forecast and transport infrastructure growth, what are the key challenges in the next phase of creating an airport city?
Leonard Blinov, Head of Marketing & Sales Development, Domodedovo International Airport

Thinking outside the (airport) box – can Dublin Airport become an airport city region?
Dublin Airport, a state-owned and operated airport, was Europe’s 16th largest airport in 2006. It has witnessed unprecedented growth compared to a number of its peer airports. It is responding to the Irish Government’s commercial mandate (State Airports Act 2004) by undertaking an intensive capital investment programme valued at over €2 billion. It currently has a record-breaking ratio of 70% vs 30% of non-aeronautical to aeronautical revenues in 2006. The speaker will set out an alternative vision for Dublin Airport, taking into account its ability to develop
Dublin Airport as an airport city region.
David Pryor, Development Officer, Department of Environment, Economic and Social Development,
Fingal County Council
