About Dubrovnik - SMAG 2010 PDF Print E-mail

Restored to its full former glory, Dubrovnik has made a swift recovery after the 1990s war. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva county. In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. The prosperity of the city of Dubrovnik has always been based on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages, as the Republic of Ragusa, also known as the fifth Maritime Republic (together with Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice), it became the only eastern Adriatic city-state to rival Venice.

The Old Town is encircled by some of the world's finest ancient city walls and is set into the deep-blue Adriatic Sea like a fortress. The walls run intact for 1940 metres, encircling the entire city, and are one of the most beautiful and strongest fort systems in Europe. A wonderful way to experience the city's history is to walk around the walls and visit some of their most impressive features. Five fortresses, including St Lawrence and Revelin, are incorporated within the walls.
Discover marble-paved streets lined with seafood restaurants around the Placa promenade, hear troubadours and jazz musicians in the streets and buy fresh olives from the early morning market.

Did you know - the mighty Saint Blaise saved Dubrovnik in the 10th century, appearing as a bearded man to the pastor of St Stephen's Cathedral and warning the locals that the Venetians were about to take over the city.
Today, he is the patron saint of the city. There's a statue of him over Pile Gate, a church carries his name, and once a year there are lively St Blaise Celebrations.
