With the launching of its inaugural 'Superjumbo' flight on 27 April 2005, Airbus has taken a giant step in delivering the technical marvel it had promised. Major airports worldwide are getting ready to welcome the A380. The 'Superjumbo' is set to delight many passengers but what will its arrival entail for the airlines and airports? With the many daunting challenges ahead for the aviation industry, the arrival of the first radically new aircraft type since the Boeing 747 'Jumbo Jet' in the late 1960s will signal he beginning of a new era for the aviation industry.

Objectives

This conference will address the challenges that airports and airlines face in welcoming the new 'Superjumbo' aircraft. In assesing the challenges faced by airports, it will examine the innovative solutions employed to solve the issues of passenger flow and services in airport terminals; extension of runway and taxiway shoulders; more powerful and versatile handling equipment; alternative passenger boarding bridge silutions and the use of automation. Airline operators also share their thoughts on the introduction of this new aircraft type into commercial service and the opportunities this will give them to offer new products and services to passenger and cargo clients.

HUMAN FACTORS

The issues associated with the introduction of the A380 - The A380 will become an increasingly critical component of the world's air transportation system. The size of the aircraft will present ‘human factors’ challenges to areas of the aviation system including maintenance, ground handling and airport infrastructure. This presentation will address some of these challenges associated with the introduction of the A380 and attempt to answer some of these important questions.

Dr Rob Lee
Aviation Consultant

MANAGING PASSENGER FLOWS TO AND FROM THE A380

The A380 and your passenger terminals - A look at the impact of the A380 on existing passenger terminals and how airports are working towards preparing for it. The following critical issues will be examined:
• Quick passenger clearance for check-in, immigration and security screening channels.
• How technology can improve the passenger process.
• Baggage systems - can they handle the increased traffic? Can RFID improve throughput and accuracy?
